School Focus and Positive Behaviour
The school positive behaviour focus this week was:
Wear the correct uniform.
Ngunnawal word of the week:
Dhari (means 'stand')
Dear St John the Apostle families,
The term is winding up very quickly now.
This week I met with a family of a child with complex needs in our school. In the near future they will be looking at high schools and they were just asking for some early advice about school options and issues to consider. Having a child with very complex needs myself has provided me with some insight as a parent as well as an educator in matters of inclusion.
During the conversation I was reminded again of the outstanding option parents have for a Catholic education pathway from Pre-school to Year 12 in Belconnen. The pre-school at St Thomas Aquinas provides a fantastic foundation for entering school and St Francis Xavier College is an excellent secondary school, particularly as an inclusive educational environment for students with complex needs. The Principal and inclusion staff are very committed to welcoming, supporting and growing every student that enrols.
Though I move to St Thomas Aquinas in 2025, I will continue to support the development of a very strong educational option for Catholic education in our Belconnen area.
Class Lists & Teachers 2025
At this time of year we are sometimes asked by parents what class their child is in next year. Students with complex needs sometimes need a little extra time to prepare for their new class and parents naturally feel anxious about what is happening. We always have these needs in mind.
Forming classes and selecting teachers for each class is a long and complex process. We have drafted the class lists and are taking another careful eye over them before finalising these. After the lists are ready we will then assign the best teacher to match each group. We will hold a 'one-up' afternoon on Wednesday 11 December from 2.00pm until 3.00pm. During that afternoon students will go into their classrooms for 2025 and meet their teacher.
We farewell Mrs Tabitha May at the end of this year. Tabitha is due to have her baby early next year and will take leave for the remainder of the year. We also farewell Ms Carly Sargent. Carly stepped in to teach in Year 5 Blue during the middle of the year. Children and staff have thoroughly enjoyed her contribution and we wish her the best at St Thomas More's in Campbell.
We welcome a few new teachers to our staff community. Firstly we welcome Mrs Cara Clarke who has been relief teaching this year and is joining us on a permanent basis. We also welcome Ms Lilly Eastman. Lilly is one of our Inclusion Assistants and, having completed her studies, will now begin teaching at St John the Apostle. We welcome Mrs Caroline Stewart, an experienced teacher currently teaching at St Matthew's in Page and excited about joining our community in 2025. Lastly, we welcome Georgia French who will teach AUSLAN to all of our students in 2025. AUSLAN is considered a language in the Australian Curriculum and we look forward to our students having the capacity to build relationships with AUSLAN users in the wider community.
School Fees 2025
Catholic Education have determined the school fees for 2025 and a separate letter has been sent out today. If you have any questions or concerns please contact me directly.
I wish everyone a peaceful weekend.

Year One Excursion to the Arboretum
On Tuesday, Year One had the opportunity to visit the National Arboretum. After traveling on the bus, we joined a kite-making workshop. All students flew their kites in the fresh air and experimented with the wind pushing against them.
Back at school, we have been learning about the concept of forces, including air resistance and gravity. While flying their kites, some got tangled, providing a rich opportunity for students to practice their problem-solving skills and resilience.
Another highlight was the POD playground. The students enjoyed taking turns on the swing and exploring the climbing equipment.
A huge thank you to our Inclusion Team—Mrs. Elliot, Miss Eastman, Miss Eustace, Mr. Tarry, and Mr. Seaman—and our volunteer, Holly. This day would not have been possible without you. Thank you!
Year Four Excursion to Questacon
On Wednesday 27th of November, Year Four went to Questacon for Science and Digital Technology.
In small groups with some amazing parent/guardian helpers we explored the galleries of Questacon.
Our favourite galleries were the Excite@Q Gallery because we all had to brave the free fall slide. We also loved Gallery 1, which has a special Lego Space and Science exhibit. We all enjoyed creating unique Lego things to add to an exhibition about the surface of Mars.
Colour Run
Please save the date for this year's Colour Run which will be held on Friday 13th December, 2024 from 1.00pm - 2:45pm (Week 9, Term 4).
Donations can be:
- sent as cash to the office each week. All money should be returned in a plastic zip lock bag, clearly labelled with your child’s name and class.
- sent as a Qkr payment. Individual sponsorships can be made via Qkr. Families can also collect cash and make the equivalent payment via Qkr. The total amount must match the record on the sponsorship card. You can find the Qkr payment under the Community Council tab.
Christmas Picnic and Gelato Orders
We will be holding a Christmas Picnic on Thursday 5th December from 5.30pm. At this picnic, each year level will do a performance and we will farewell Mr Matthew Garton as a community. I sent out infromation about the schedule of the evening and costume ideas on Compass this week. The gelato is now sold out.
Fete 2025
The Fete Committee is busy planning for the Fete on 14 March 2025. Its not too late to join the committee or register your interest in being a stall convenor. If you would like to volunteer, please email Stephanie Juskevics at stephanieh1978@homail.com
The committee kindly request if you could start to consider the items below for donations for the fete. We rely on our community to donate a couple of items per child. Please see below a list of the items we will be requesting. As we get closer to the date, we will send out weekly reminders for the different donations so you don’t feel overwhelmed with requests.
Thank you in advance for your donations and support.

For the 2025 Fete, we are asking that a full jar is donated. The items also don’t need to be in a jar. They could be in a zip lock bag, a plastic container or anything that is enclosed and we can stick a raffle ticket on.

- Old keys that are no longer useful
Pre-loved Soft Toys
We are also asking for clean and in good condition pre-loved soft toys to be donated.

What Students are Learning About
Year 5 have been very busy! Firstly they have begun to reflect on Advent by using creative ways of displaying the names of Jesus and the Nativity.
Arjun in 5B has written a wonderful reflection on what he knows about Mary. Great work Arjun!
Catholic Life and Reflection
I used to live in Spence in the late 1980’s and there was a gentleman that I would see regularly who walked his greyhounds. At the time I thought he was an elderly man, but I suspect not as old as I thought at the time.
He would always be up somewhere near the top of Kingsford Smith Drive and Kuringa Drive. Over the years there were many different dogs with him, always greyhounds, sometimes one and sometimes two but over the years I saw him less and less. When I did see him, I would point him out to my boys.
It has been a long time between sightings. About two weeks ago there he was. I was so happy! Someone who I have never spoken to and who doesn’t know I exist, but whose continued presence felt comforting. Never underestimate the power of your presence to someone. You might not know the impact you are having.
Hebrews 13:2
New Revised Standard Version, Anglicised Catholic Edition
2 Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.

Happy Birthday to Zayn Siddiqui, Archie Amsteins, Cyrus Kayvanshokoohi and Edit Brennan who all celebrated a birthday over the last week.
This year we will be presenting a number of awards to students. Please see below the scedule for this term. Most awards will be handed out on a Friday morning.
At St John the Apostle we teach a number of programs that focus on mastering particular knowledge and skills in literacy and numeracy. Students are taught based on their individual, current level of mastery. Two of the programs we teach are Spelling Mastery and Rocket Maths. We regularly collect data from students in both of these programs so we can track that they are having continous progress. Students work hard to achieve mastery in these programs, so we celebrate the students who show mastery in these programs by giving them awards.
Students will receive Spelling Mastery Awards once they reach mastery three times at their Spelling Mastery level. For some students this is 10/10 and for others it is 25/25. For Kindergarten students will receive Spelling Mastery Awards when they receive 10/10 for each unit they complete in Sounds~Write.
Students will receive Maths Mastery Awards each time they beat their Rocket Math Two Minute Goal.
This year we will also be presenting Brag Tag Awards. These will be handed out each time a student receives 20 brag tags.

The Year 9 -12 St Francis Xavier Music Ensemble along with their Music teacher Mrs Thea Zimpel, came to visit St John’s school hall on Friday 22nd of November for an afternoon performance.
The students were amazed at the talent and the variety of different instruments that the students were playing.
The ensemble wowed us with their opening number from “The Phantom of The Opera”, along with some other fun classics. We were invited to sing along with a Christmas set of “Silent Night”, “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”, and a speedy version of “Jingle Bells”.
The closing number by 3 piece rock band, “3 Piece Meal. “Raised the hall roof with their Heavy Metal rendition of “Let it Go.” From the movie Frozen.
Mrs Zimpel is looking forward to visiting St John’s again, as well as the possibility of being our students music teacher at SFX in the future!

The Power of Perspective Taking in Parenting
My two children were fighting. Again.
“Abbie, what is going on?” Abbie described how Chanel teased her, was mean, and was hurting her. “Chanel, is that true?” I asked the older of the two girls. Her reply was instant. Without meeting my eyes, she said, “No”.
“Chanel, if I were to ask you to pretend to be Abbie and I had you describe what went on, what would you say to me?” Chanel reluctantly took Abbie’s perspective and acknowledged that Abbie would say that “Chanel teased me, was mean, and hurt me.”
A man spoke to a famous speaker after a conference about relationships. “I can’t understand my son. He won’t listen to me.”
The speaker responded, “Let me say back to you what I just heard you tell me. You can’t understand your son because he won’t listen to you.”
“That’s right”, the man confirmed.
The speaker reiterated, “Let me say it again. You can’t understand your son because he won’t listen to you.” He paused as the man stared at him. Then he added, “I thought that to understand your son, you need to listen to him.”
I’ve heard many exasperated parents ask me variations on the same question. “Why is my child like this? Why do they do that? Why can’t they just listen and understand?”
As adults, we have a lot more life experience than children. We’ve seen more, learned more, and faced more challenges. It’s easy to forget what it’s like to see the world through a child’s eyes. Yet when our children feel understood, truly listened to, life works better—for them and for us.
How to Better Understand Your Child’s Perspective
- Remember what it was like to be a child. Think back to your own childhood experiences. What were your fears and worries? What challenges did you face?
- Listen attentively to your child. Pay attention to what they say and how they say it. Try to understand their feelings and point of view.
- Ask questions to gain clarity. Don’t assume you know what they’re thinking or feeling. Ask open-ended questions to encourage them to share their thoughts and feelings.
- Be patient and understanding. Children are still learning and growing. They may not always have the words to express themselves clearly.
- Avoid dismissing their feelings. Even if their worries seem small to you, they are very real to your child.
Sharing Your Perspective in a Helpful Way
- Offer comfort and reassurance. Let your child know that you’re there for them.
- Share your own experiences (in an age-appropriate way). This can help them understand that challenges are a normal part of life and that they can overcome them.
- Help them develop coping strategies. Teach them healthy ways to deal with stress and difficult emotions, such as deep breathing, talking about their feelings, or engaging in physical activity.
By remembering to see the world through your child’s eyes, you can build a stronger connection with them and help them navigate life’s challenges with confidence.
